Our Mission

Why We Started

Osprey Reviews was born from a simple realization: choosing the right backpack shouldn't be confusing or overwhelming. In 2020, a group of us set out on the John Muir Trail, each carrying a different Osprey model. After 21 days and 215 miles, we had a clear understanding of what makes a great backpack-and what doesn't. The problem? Most backpack review sites either lacked depth or were sponsored by brands pushing inferior products.

We founded Osprey Reviews to fill this gap. Our team includes former outdoor guides, long-distance hikers, and gear testers who have collectively spent over 10,000 hours on the trail. We're not just reviewers-we're users who depend on the gear we recommend every single day.

Our Team

Meet the Experts

Our team consists of outdoor professionals and dedicated enthusiasts who bring diverse perspectives to backpack evaluation:

Alex Carter - Lead Reviewer & Founder

Alex has been hiking long-distance trails since 2015 and has completed the Pacific Crest Trail (2,650 miles), Appalachian Trail (2,190 miles), and Colorado Trail (486 miles). He brings a technical perspective to backpack evaluation, focusing on load distribution and durability. Alex holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and previously worked in product design for outdoor gear companies.

Expertise: Long-distance hiking, product engineering, trail testing

"I started Osprey Reviews because I was tired of reading reviews that didn't match my real-world experience. I want to help hikers find backpacks that actually work for their specific needs, not just what looks good on paper."

Maya Rodriguez - Senior Gear Tester

Maya is a former Outward Bound instructor and wilderness therapy guide with 8 years of experience leading groups in extreme environments. She specializes in evaluating backpacks for multi-day expeditions and group use. Maya has a Wilderness First Responder certification and has worked in search and rescue operations.

Expertise: Wilderness education, group gear, expedition planning

"Testing backpacks isn't just about comfort-it's about safety. I've seen what happens when gear fails on the trail, and that's why I'm so meticulous about evaluating every detail of a backpack's design and construction."

James Park - Urban Travel Specialist

James is a digital nomad who has lived out of his backpack for the past 5 years while traveling to 47 countries. He specializes in evaluating backpacks for urban use, travel efficiency, and carry-on compliance. James has a background in industrial design and previously worked for a major luggage manufacturer.

Expertise: Urban travel, carry-on compliance, travel efficiency

"Many backpacks marketed for travel are actually better suited for hiking. I focus on the features that matter most when you're navigating airports and city streets-not just the trail."

Sarah Chen - Family & Youth Gear Specialist

Sarah is a mother of two and a former elementary school teacher who now leads family backpacking trips. She specializes in evaluating backpacks for children, families, and short-duration hikers. Sarah has organized over 50 family camping trips and has a degree in Child Development.

Expertise: Family backpacking, youth gear, short trips
Hometown: Denver, Colorado

"Backpacking with kids is completely different from solo hiking. I focus on backpacks that make the experience enjoyable for the whole family, not just the adults."

Our Review Process

We don't believe in quick, superficial reviews. Our process involves months of testing, multiple team members evaluating each backpack, and real-world scenarios that most reviewers never consider. Here's how we do it:

1. Initial Analysis & Spec Review

Every backpack review begins with a thorough analysis of the manufacturer's specifications. We examine:

  • Materials and construction quality
  • Load capacity and volume measurements
  • Frame type and suspension system
  • Feature set and accessibility
  • Weight specifications

We cross-reference these specs with industry standards and identify any discrepancies or misleading claims.

2. Controlled Testing Environment

Before hitting the trail, we conduct controlled tests in our testing facility:

  • Ergonomic Testing: We measure load distribution using pressure sensors and motion capture technology to analyze how weight shifts during movement.
  • Durability Testing: We subject backpacks to abrasion tests, water resistance tests, and stress tests to simulate years of real-world use.
  • Accessibility Testing: We evaluate how quickly and easily users can access different compartments while wearing the backpack.

3. Real-World Trail Testing

Each backpack undergoes at least 100 miles of real-world testing in various environments:

  • Day Hikes: Testing accessibility, comfort, and feature functionality on shorter trips
  • Overnight Trips: Evaluating load distribution, durability, and comfort over 24+ hours
  • Multi-Day Expeditions: Assessing ventilation, weight distribution, and organizational features on extended trips
  • Urban/Travel Testing: Using backpacks for daily commutes and travel scenarios

We test each backpack in different seasons and weather conditions to evaluate performance in real-world scenarios.

4. Team Evaluation & Consensus

Our team uses a standardized evaluation form that covers:

  • Comfort and ergonomics (30% of score)
  • Durability and construction quality (25% of score)
  • Organizational features and accessibility (20% of score)
  • Weight-to-value ratio (15% of score)
  • Special features and innovation (10% of score)

Each team member scores the backpack independently, and we only publish the review after achieving consensus on all major points. This prevents individual biases from affecting our evaluations.

5. User Feedback Integration

After publishing our initial review, we monitor user feedback and conduct follow-up testing based on common issues or praises from our readers:

  • We contact readers who have used the backpacks in different scenarios
  • We conduct additional testing based on specific use cases
  • We update our reviews annually to reflect any changes or new information
